When do you think they will starting put counties into a winter storm warning?

I headed over to accuweather, just to see what they are forecasting. Weather.com is not giving us total details on snow accumulations. Just wanted to see what they are forcasting until we get a better picture tonight on the 10 pm news. Check out the picture below. It's saying 9 to 17 inches total. That's a big gap! I think we will see around the 7-8 inch mark. I'm hoping for the most possible to miss out on my exams this week come tues/wed Smile

I'm sorry, but I had to pull the AccuWeather forecast information. We cannot legally host any of their content on our website.

Hailey, what I meant by that comment is, what if a major ice storm was headed for an area and you downplayed it saying it was only going to be a cold rain. If someone thought your forecast was right, then he/she could be put into a very dangerous situation. I just ask that when you are stating your opinion, don't act like it's fact. I don't know very much about the weather, but I use this forum to help me to understand it more. It's good to hear other's opinions on what will happen, as long as everyone understands that it's only an opinion.

I'm just curious...why does everyone's forecast seem to be going strictly with the NAM? The GFS has been very consistent with putting down 6-8 inches of snow over most of the area. However, that seems to be discarded and the NAM seems to be exactly what we are expected to get. What makes the GFS solution wrong for this storm?

That's a good question Greatness. It looks like the 0z GFS tonight put down 6-8 inches, like you said. I hope the NAM will change before the storm hits. It's kinda weird that it has a circle of lesser amounts.

I agree...By now, the NWS usually has estimating amounts don't they? Right now they are only indicating information for winter watch with the possibility of up to 6 inches in some places. I think this storm is going to be hard to predict.

Well it seems like the system just keeps getting weaker and moving south. The NAM has around 4 inches for the Springfield area and GFS has about 5 inches. The liquid precip forecast is for about 5 tenths. It sounds like that the snow will be on going for close to 24 hours so you would think it would add up to more then that, but it must be a very light snow. NWS still has us under a winter storm watch. My guessing is that the majority of the counties will just get a winter weather advisory. If it was going to be very bad they would of already issued a winter storm warning by now like in KS/OK. Looking at this storm several days ago I thought it was going to be the big one, but now it is nothing more then a nuisance.

Post  Gary_Monett Sun Feb 07, 2010 7:38 am

Good morning all.

Analyzing the latest data, it does appear as if the winter storm is still set to impact the area late tonight through early Tuesday. I was slightly perplexed that the NWS in Springfield did not issue either advisories or warnings with this package, but I assume they had their reasons. While the 0z NAM cuts down on some snow totals for the Springfield area, the "snow bubble" from that model run looks fishy to me. The 0z GFS is still forecasting 6-8" for the Springfield area, which looks to be more accurate.

Well Gary in Monett from all the different sites and forecasts that I have read, it looks like you are going to be in the area of the heaviest snow. I don't understand where the 6-10" of snow on the western side is coming from. Looking at the track of the Low it is pretty far south and all of the good moisture will be in Arkansas. Something else must be going on besides the energy from the low pressure in western MO to get more snow then Springfield and points east.

Wow the NAM pushed the moisture further south this morning!! I think my prediction of 3 inches is going to be dead on! We may get less than 3 inches!!

The latest NAM is a joke. It has most of SW MO getting 1-2 inches of snow and areas in NE OK getting nothing whatsoever. Looks like the professional met's are going to have to throw the models out the window and just make a educated guess at snowfall totals.

Ha Kevin I bet that map below really excites you. Looks like the 6-10" swath Craig had last night is showing about 2 inches now. This storm is impossible to forecast.

IMO you might as well grab you some crayons and a blindfold and draw the map yourself if you are relying on the NAM snow forecast. This model has been nothing short of wretched the past couple of storms we have had and I dont buy into anything it says. Most other consensus this morning says we see a general 4-6 snowfall across all of SW MO by Mon night, maybe more if this SW storm strengthens a bit or phases more with the northern stream. The really big totals will prolly be down in NC AR again this time but not gonna be a small storm here, either. Everybody have a wonderful day in the Ozarks and get ready for some SNOW!

No joke! I don't buy the models this time.

Maybe we should play pin-the-tail-on-the-weather map to forecast snowfall totals.

These models are all over the place this time...guess it is going to be one of those nowcasted events.
